09/09 Parents and Young Adults : Healthy Food for Teenagers
It is unfortunate that most parents are not considering healthy food for teenagers. The media markets unhealthy and fast foods to this demographic, it is much more difficult to keep a teenager on a healthy diet than a young child. A teen may feel as though you are restricting his choices and be more likely to eat junk to spite this. Teenagers are still in their growing stage; like young children, they need good food in order to live well.
Good eating habits are important for people of all ages; not just children and teens. However, kids and young adults are especially in need. As a whole, healthy food for teenagers should involve variety, fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins, and older children should eat between three and five meals per day.
Teenagers have different health needs based on their sex; boys tend to need more protein than girls. This is because their bodies tend to build more natural muscle. A good way to get protein is through lean meat, nuts, soy protein, eggs and dairy. The body converts carbohydrates into sugar for energy. Teenagers should consume between six and eleven servings of these daily. Servings do not need to be large either. They can get the vitamins and minerals they need in just a few slices of bread or a cup of whole-grain pasta.
It is important to teach teenagers about healthy eating, especially if they have never practiced good eating habits before. Try to discourage binge eating; teens are usually eating junk food at social events. Junk food has no nutritional value this is why we can eat continuously without feeling very full. The body does not think that it has gotten the nutrients it needs and does not signal the brain to stop eating. Teens should realize that they should eat only when they are hungry, and if they eat healthier foods, they will feel full and stop sooner. You can also figure out what your body needs by watching the signals it gives you. For example, if you are often craving peanut butter or lean meat, your body will be trying to tell you that it needs protein.
The hectic life of teenagers at school can make it difficult for them to eat well. Studying, working, and social activities take a toll on schedules. Sometimes eating falls to the bottom of the list, and eating right cannot win out over quick junk foods. As a result teenagers away from home often do not eat properly, and their health can suffer because of this. An adequate and healthy diet is necessary for them; this is why it is a good idea to establish good eating habits for them early in life.
Healthy food for teenagers should be taken seriously. Food is not a reward. It should not be a tool to punish your children when they go wrong. You should also visit the nutritionist to learn more about your teens, having in mind that they also have preferences for certain foods.
