08/11 Good Healthy Food Choices at Fast Food Restaurants
There are certain things you should know about healthy fast food restaurants. When it comes to those dreaded fast foods, moderation is the name of the game. If you can’t always avoid the fast food fare, at least do indulge in these foods on rare or special occasions. The fact is, though, that most of the healthy fast food restaurants out there are getting into the habit of offering some healthy alternatives. If you know what’s available, you can avail yourself of healthier choices. White meat chicken, for example, is a healthy alternative to the greasy burger on the menu.
Some healthy fast food restaurants try to do their best to offer healthy choices. Pay attention to what’s on their menu: do they have foods made of lean meats and do they include vegetables as well? Drinking water, as opposed to some sugary soft drink, is another possibility. A sugary soft drink can contain as much as 400 calories, mostly from sugar. Iced tea is a much better choice, particularly if it’s not sweetened.
Here is a list of some good choices in healthy fast food restaurants:
1. Either drink water or freshly squeezed fruit juices.
2. A one-patty burger is better than those that contain several layers of meat. And watch out for things like mayonnaise as well. Stick with ketchup or mustard. These are better for you.
3. Instead of the ubiquitous fries, try a baked potato or even a salad. Once more, these are better choices.
4. There are now places that serve veggie burgers. These not only contain good nutrients, but they will also save you as much as 300 calories a serving.
5. Grilling chicken is better for you than frying it; again, a healthy choice.
When chicken is fried, it is still better for you if it is fried with the skin removed from it. And if the choice is for the breast, you gain extra protein without extra fat. Mashed potatoes can be made healthy, too, provided that you keep them from drowning in gravy. Avoid burgers that are large or double on the bun. A regular burger – a one-patty kind – without extra mayonnaise or without the slice of cheese on it, is an obviously better choice. If you must have cheese, use Swiss cheese instead of some other varieties. There are good healthy fast food restaurants, which serve all these.
Healthy fast foods may also include a soup and salad. Yogurt can be good, too, especially the plain and low-fat variety. Fresh fruits added to a meal can increase its value as well. If you must have a hamburger, choose a single patty and – again – avoid the extras that make it especially bad for you. Serve them with tomatoes and onions instead of with mayo or cheese. Meat that’s baked is obviously better than meat that’s fried. Keeping these things in mind can lead to a healthy lifestyle; and a longer life.
